Special Exhibition of Important Historical Document
Letter from Shibata Katsuie to Niwa Nagahide

Shibta Katsuie and Niwa Nagahide were both members of the Four Elders, or the supreme council of the Regime of Oda Nobunaga.
In the wake of Nobunaga's assassination by Akechi Mitsuhide, one of his generals, and the destruction of Mitsuhide's forces by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, another Elder, a struggle for succession broke out between Hideyoshi and Katsuie. Nagahide was struggling to maintain peace between the two. In the letter, Katsuie asks Nagahide for assistance.
This particular document has been kept by the Tokugawa Shogunal Household, and thanks to the research conducted by the Aichi Prefecture History Department, is now recognized as one of great importance regarding the history of the Oda-Toyotomi Period.

This document will be on special display at the Kunosan Toshogu Museum until 2006 June 2. Historical documents from the Warring States period related to Oda Nobunaga, Oda Nobukatsu (Nobunaga's son) and Tokugawa Ieyasu, belonging to the Museum, will also be exhibited.
